It’s simple, the more air you move the more power you make
Easy enough to understand, we get that. But what we don’t get is why so very few engine builders think of it that way.
No, they move right past that and focus in increasing compression, adding more timing and leaning out fuel mixtures.
Does that make more power? Yes it does. As well as a lot more heat and a serious amount wear, that you get the bill for in the end.
Why not first make your air compressor work as good as it could be? Then you might not need to push the engine to get the power you’re looking for with a nice bump of reliability.
Piston rings: Make sure they're flat
Piston rings don’t work nearly as well as most think. In fact, it’s something most all builders ignore. They simply take the ring, put it in the piston and call it a day.
But all too common is “ring dish”, but the fix is very simple. To work well, rings need to be flat and round. But nobody takes the time to make sure they are. But we know better.
Let’s not forget about ring lands. They too need to be flat and parallel to work well. Have any idea how many pistons out there that need help? We do!
Piston rings: Make sure they're round
HERE’S WHAT’S IMPORTANT:
• Partial Face Contact: Shows areas of no face contact.
• 100% Face Contact: Solid thin line shows good contact.
• Before Face Lapping: This is a good starting point.
• After Face Lapping: Uniform face contact that’s 75% of the ring thickness. Success!
Understanding blow-by:
Where the gas goes
Most think blow-by moves past the ring face. More commonly, the gas flows around the ring, then underneath and lifts the ring off the ring land. Remember, the piston is moving down when this happens.
Fortunately, we have a fix for that. The AF/1® coating actually attracts lubricants, so there is now more lube “volume” in the ring land.
Think about two pieces of glass with oil between them. You can’t pull the apart, right?
If you can’t lift the ring off the land, it cannot leak. It’s that simple!
